How to Keep Your Dog Safe and Happy During the Summer: Practical and Effective Advice

  • Post category:Tips

Summer can be a challenging time for dogs due to the high temperatures. Here are some tips to keep your dog safe and comfortable during the hot months:

1. Hydration

  • Fresh, clean water: Make sure your dog has constant access to fresh, clean water. Consider carrying a water bottle and a portable bowl when you leave the house.
  • Ice in the water: Add ice cubes to the water to keep it cooler for longer.

2. Heat protection

  • Avoid walks during the hottest hours: Go for an early morning or late evening walk when temperatures are cooler.
  • Street surfaces: Beware of hot pavements and asphalt, which can burn your dog’s paws. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for his paws.
  • Shade: Make sure your dog has access to shaded areas when outdoors.

3. Coat care

  • Regular brushing: Brush your dog regularly to remove dead hair and help air circulation in his skin.
  • Don’t shave: Avoid cutting the coat too short, as the coat acts as an insulator against both heat and cold.

4. Activities and exercise

  • Water play: Consider water play such as swimming or playing with sprinklers to help your dog stay cool.
  • Indoor activities: On very hot days, opt for indoor play and exercise.

5. Feeding

  • Light food: Dogs may have less appetite in hot weather. Offer fresh, light foods.
  • Frozen treats: Prepare homemade frozen treats, such as frozen unsweetened yoghurt or pieces of frozen fruit (dog-friendly).

6. Sun protection

  • Sunscreen: Apply pet sunscreen to your dog’s exposed areas, especially if he has a light coat or is prone to sunburn.

7. Heat stroke prevention

  • Heat stroke symptoms: Learn to recognise the symptoms of heat stroke, such as excessive panting, salivation, weakness, dizziness, vomiting, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness.
  • Immediate action: If you suspect your dog has heat stroke, get him to a cool place immediately, douse him with cool (not ice-cold) water and seek emergency veterinary care.

8. Avoid leaving your dog in the car

  • Never leave your dog alone in the car: Even with the windows open, cars can heat up dangerously fast, which can be fatal for your dog.

9. Veterinary check-ups

  • Regular check-ups: Keep veterinary check-ups up to date to ensure your dog is in good health throughout the summer.
By following these tips, you can help your dog enjoy the summer safely and healthily.
